1940 Flight to the West. Rice takes up wartime issues in this debate-filled drama, set aboard the Clipper from Lisbon to New York as a mixed group of passengers discusses current events. Rice also writes Two on an Island, a romantic comedy depicting the difficult times of a playwright and his aspiring actress girlfriend as they try to achieve success on Broadway. To re-create a sense of modern city life, Rice filled the stage with recognizable big-city types.
