The Great Illusion is a book by Norman Angell, first published in the United Kingdom in 1909 under the title Europe's Optical Illusion[1] and republished in 1910 and subsequently in various enlarged and revised editions under the title The Great Illusion.[2] It is an influential book in the field of international relations.[3]

New 1933 edition

In The Great Illusion, Angell's primary thesis was, in the words of historian James Joll, that "the economic cost of war was so great that no one could possibly hope to gain by starting a war the consequences of which would be so disastrous."[4] For that reason, a general European war was very unlikely to start, and if it did, it would not last long.[5] He argued that war was economically and socially irrational[6] and that war between industrial countries was futile because conquest did not pay. J. D. B. Miller writes: "The 'Great Illusion' was that nations gained by armed confrontation, militarism, war, or conquest."[7]

Interwar edition[edit]

A new edition of The Great Illusion was published in 1933; it added "the theme of collective defence."[10] Angell was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1933.

**** Harvard Classics Volume 17: Folklore and Fable;

Folklore and Fable: Aesop, Grimm, Andersen:

The Harvard Classics, originally marketed as Dr. Eliot's Five-Foot Shelf of Books, is a 50-volume series of classic works of world literature, important speeches, and historical documents compiled and edited by Harvard University President Charles W. Eliot.[1][2] Eliot believed that a careful reading of the series and following the eleven reading plans included in Volume 50 would offer a reader, in the comfort of the home, the benefits of a liberal education, entertainment and counsel of history's greatest creative minds.[3] The initial success of The Harvard Classics was due, in part, to the branding offered by Eliot and Harvard University. Buyers of these sets were apparently attracted to Eliot's claims. The General Index contains upwards of 76,000 subject references.[4][5][6]

March 2, 1982

Mr. Chao, the Agassiz professor emeritus of Oriental languages and literature at the Univeristy of California at Berkeley, was credited with being the founder of modern linguistics in China. He designed a phonetic alphabet for Chinese that was officially adopted by the Government there in 1928 as ''National Romanization'' and was used for many years.

Mr. Chao, born in Tianjin, China, earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Cornell in 1914 and a doctorate in philosophy from Harvard in 1918. He was also an author and researcher.

After teaching subjects ranging from physics to music at numerous institutions in the United States and China, Mr. Chao settled at Berkeley in 1947 and became a United States citizen in 1954. He retired from the classroom in 1960.

Mr. Chao is survived by four daughters, Lensey Namioka of Seattle, Rulan Pian of Cambridge, Xinna Chao of Changsha, China, and Bella Chiu of Arlington, Mass.; six grandchildren and one great-grandson. His wife, Buwei Yang Chao, died in 1981.
