IWA began in 1924 in Geneva, Switzerland as the Student’s International Union with the objective of providing a forum to enhance the further understanding of international problems as well as promote a service ethic among the youth of variou nationalities.
In 1941 the SIU relocated its offices to New York City with summer seminars in Salisbury, Connecticut. ﾠSeptember of 1977 saw the SIU merge with the American Universities Field Staff (AUFS) in an effort to expand services and to stabilize agency funding.
In 1994, the organization merged with another non-profit organization, the Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA), and offered overseas fellowships to American students.
IWA continues to develop new and innovative programs to reach out to diverse social groups with programs to address current challenges in international politics.
