May Wind

I SAID, "I have shut my heart

     As one shuts an open door,

That Love may starve therein

     And trouble me no more."

But over the roofs there came

     The wet new wind of May,

And a tune blew up from the curb

     Where the street-pianos play.

My room was white with the sun

     And Love cried out in me,

"I am strong, I will break your heart

     Unless you set me free."

我說“我把心收起，
向人家把門關了，
叫‘愛情’生生的餓死，
也許不再和我為難了。”

但是五月的濕風，
時時從屋頂上吹來；
還有那街心的琴調,
一陣陣的飛來。
一屋裏都是太陽光，
這時候“愛情”有點醉了，
他說，“我是關不住的，
我要把你的心打碎了！”

愛情永遠是關不住的，如同春天，一進二月，節氣剛沾著點“雨水”的邊兒，那撲面的已是不寒楊柳風。1912年前後，美國也掀起一場“新詩”運動，意象派應運而生，這首原詩題為《在屋頂上》的詩，正是美國意象派女詩人莎拉·替斯代爾的《關不住了！》。胡適自稱這是他的“‘新詩’成立的新紀元”，可見此詩在他心中的分量。
