燕京大學肄業，香港新亞書院第一屆畢業生，美國哈佛大學歷史學博士，先後師從國學大師錢穆和當代漢學泰斗楊聯陞。
●經歷：
美國密西根大學助教授、哈佛大學教授、香港新亞學院校長兼中文大學副校長、美國耶魯大學歷史講座教授、普林斯頓大學講座教授、康乃爾大學首任胡適講座訪問教授(1991-1992)。2001年6月自普林斯頓大學教職退休。
