1914年9月13日胡適在日記中對傳統的「後代」觀念進行了激烈批評，他說：「孟子曰：『不孝有三，無後為大。』吾國家族制度以嗣續為中堅，其流弊之大者有六：一、望嗣續之心切，故不以多妻為非。男子四十無後可以娶妾，不以為非，即其妻亦不以為忤。故嗣續為多妻之正當理由。其弊一。
二、父母欲早抱孫，故多早婚。其弊二。

三、惟其以無後為憂也，故子孫以多為貴，故生產無節。其弊三。
四、其所望者不欲得女而欲得男，故女子之地位益卑。其弊四。
五、父母之望子也，以為養老計，故諺曰，『生兒防老。』及其既得子矣，父母自視老矣，可以……坐而待養矣。故吾國中人以上之家，人至五十歲，即無志世事，西方人勤勞時代，平均至六十五歲始已。吾國人則五十歲已退休，其為社會之損失，何可勝算？其弊五。
六、父母養子而待養於子，養成一種牢不可拔之依賴性。其弊六。」[3](pp 465-466)
