今早先生看見胡頌平，就問：「昨天談的『廁』字的讀音查出了嗎？」胡頌平把在《辭海》查出錄下的條子給先生看了。這個字當便所解的讀「ㄘ」，當惻字解的讀「ㄘㄜ」。先生想起家鄉的廁所與豬欄連一起。因說：「我當駐美大使時代，有一天，羅斯福總統的夫人來請我到她的家鄉做一次講演，是對一個青年訓練班的講演。因為她是總統夫人，不好意思不答應。……她的家鄉是美國最東北的梅因州(Maine)，和加拿大接壤的地方。到了梅因州，要換小火車再到她的家鄉去。這個小火車站在偏僻的鄉下，客人很少，只有我一個人。我覺得要大便，就上車站的廁所去，這裡沒有抽水馬桶了。看看是一個很深糞坑，上面是可以坐的。正在這個時候，聽見豬叫的聲音。原來廁所旁邊木柵欄裡是養豬的，跟我們中國鄉下地方的情形差不多。」
