我記得這天胡適、趙元任等日記中都有悼念文。
1945年4月12日晚楊聯陞又去聽哈佛經濟系和社會系的幾位名教授討論海氏的書。這一天適值羅斯福總統逝世，他在日記中寫了一首悼詩，起句云：「章憲煌煌告五洲，大西洋月印如鉤」，正是頌讚羅氏的 「大西洋憲章」。他的政治傾向還是很清楚的。這兩天的記事為他的壽聯提供了一種思想的背景。從這個意義上說，楊和胡一樣，也是學術本位的自由主義者。正是 由於愛好羅斯福所揭示的「四大自由」，他萬般無奈地作出了定居美國的抉擇。然而也幸虧如此，他才躲開了政治的紛擾，在哈佛燕京漢和圖書館裡，窮年累月地博 覽群書，終於為西方漢學界放一異彩。
